Jewels From Upcoming Auctions at Phillips de Pury and Christie’s Paris Jewels

christiessss

Early December is shaping up to be a very busy time for jewelry at auction, perfect for the upcoming holidays gift-giving.  Between the Magnificent Jewels sales at Sotheby’s and Christie’s and the other important sales from notable collections, a few sales of less prestige have a some jewelry worth highlighting.

First up is Christie’s Paris Jewels on December 5th, 2012.  Though on the smaller side with only 154 lots, there are several great examples of works by René Boivin, Suzanne Belperron and Boucheron.

Following the next day is Phillips de Pury’s Jewels sale in New York, which has a nice assortment of jewelry from various makers as well as more contemporary designs from Enigma and Margherita Burghener.

Without further ado, I present my selections from the three jewelry auctions, first from Christie’s Paris Jewels, the descriptions of which are in French.

Pre-Lot Text

The term Kashmir has come to signify the most desirable and expensive of blue sapphires, and identifies both the place of origin and the colour of stone.
These extraordinary gems are from the legendary mines in the Zanskar range of the northwestern Himalayas, above the virtually inaccessible village of Sunjam.
The sapphires were discovered in 1881 when a landslide occurred at an upland valley. By 1882, the area was crowded with miners, all looking for the most beautiful sapphires ever to be found. At times they were removing rough stones as large as grapefruits from the site and selling them privately. Upon hearing of the superb gems, The Maharajah of Kashmir sent his own regiment to take the possession of the mine and all private enterprise was forbidden. Extensive and productive mining went on for the next five years under his control and within a decade the sapphire rush ended as the mines were exhausted. Some new mines were opened since then but all have yielded poor results.
Kashmir sapphires command a much higher price premium than all other sapphires, not only for their rarity, but also for their rich, cornflower blue or velvety blue color that have a mesmerizing sleepy quality.

Pre-Lot Text

Raymond Templier is one of the first jewellers to imagine jewellery with rigorous principles and geometric leanings, without excluding the fantasy part necessary to any feminine adornment.
“Raymond Templier’s creations in jewellery totally belong to our time, as much as a poem by Paul Valéry, a construction by Le Corbusier or Mallet-Stevens, a cubist painting by Braque or Picasso.” Paul Sentenac (1884-1958)
Day parure or night parure? Raymond Templier has imagined a transformable bracelet according to the time of the day. In gold set with diamonds it will adorn an elegant gown: in gold only it will be more discreet.
This double dealing is typical from the 1940s. Besides the bracelet, the gold and diamonds clips can be worn separately on clothes, highlighting the neckline of a dress or a suit. This jewel with pure leanings and geometric shape is a good representation of how Raymond Templier imagines the jewel: like a real masterpiece.

Pre-Lot Text

A pioneer of modern jewellery design, Suzanne Belperron with her timeless and incomparable style acquired a strong reputation among an ever-expanding clientele of European royalty, café society and Hollywood movie stars such as Diana Vreeland, Daisy Fellowes, Merle Oberon, Florence Gould, Barbara Hutton, the Duchess of Windsor, Nina Ricci, Christian Dior, Jeanne Lanvin or Robert Mallet-Stevens.
Fashion innovator Elsa Schiaparelli championed the young jeweller. Photographed for Vogue wearing Belperron’s creations in 1933, she declared it “the new theme in jewels.”
Her preference goes to strong and simple lines in her creations. Taking her inspiration from flowers as well as shells and stars, she created very stylised pieces and refined archetypal motifs. She was very innovative in her choice of materials and colours. She was particularly keen on monochrome designs, playing with subtle variations of colours.
