The highly imaginative and artistic creations of  jewellery by Jean and Pierre Bellin can be found in many important and scholarly collections around the world.  Perhaps more renown abroad than at home, Jean & Pierre Bellin created exquisite jewels which were symbolic of French boutique jewellery. Their name is revered especially in the Middle East and Asia and in order to purchase and own one of their creations clients had to be put on a waiting list for extensive periods of time.

Jean & Pierre were part of the very exclusive and secretive world of High-end jewellery and they were the fourth generation to continue the family business which was formed at the beginning of the 20th century and were trained by both their father and grand-father.  After several years working as jewellers for Cartier they decided to open their first own atelier on 16 rue de la Grange-Batelière in Paris.  Their exceptional imagination and technical skills permitted them to expand their business very quickly and open an additional new workshop on 62 rue Lafayette, one of the biggest workshops in the French capital.

At the time of their production they were known in the high end jewellery market as being particularly gifted at creating the most impossible and challenging designs and despite being one of the most successful independent jewellers in France, Jean and Pierre Bellin found the large majority  of their revenues  came from abroad.  Their unique and colourful style using stones such as Emerald and rock crystal, which are difficult to cut, meant they were always up to date with the French Haute Couture.  Jean & Pierre Bellin’s main inspiration was the Art Deco style which employed the use of geometric forms, but they also were admired for their flowing and more elaborate style of Baroque art.

The Magnificent Musical Automaton Toy Cabinet was made especially for exhibition at the Basel Fair at the beginning of the 1990s to showcase their incredible talent and skill as craftsmen of the highest calibre and was purchased for an Important Private Collection.

The “Flamingo and Lotus” automaton clock combines two Cartier motifs within an impressive, glamorously gem-set work of art.  Cartier’s Lotus automata clocks arose during the 1980s during an age of decadence and sumptuous design in Mystery Clocks.  For a similar example of Cartier Lotus automata clock from the 1980s, see Barracca, J., Negretti, G., and Nencini, F., Le Temps de Cartier, p. 305.  Perched alongside, the bejeweled Flamingo is synonymous with the royal history of Cartier.  This dazzling motif hearkens back to the magnificent and famous Flamingo brooch formerly in the collection of the Duchess of Windsor, which was purchased by Collection Cartier for £1,721,250 / US$2,678,954 at Sotheby’s London in November 2010.

The Cartier “Pendule Mystérieuses” or “Mystery Clock” exudes a mystic elegance that has captured the imagination of Cartier collectors for decades.  Inspired by the work of the 1850s French magician and clockmaker, Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin, Maurice Couet devised the first Mystery Clock in 1913 which was named “Pendules Mysterieuses Model A.”

This mechanically and aesthetically remarkable design was the basis for some of Cartier’s most impressive clocks of the 1920s and beyond. The time appears to float, indicated by two rotating crystal disks that suspend the hour hand and minute hand in a captivating dance.  From the perspective of the viewer, the clock operates without mechanical means, hence its description as a Mystery clock.

Undoubtedly, these fascinating clocks demand an inquisitive mind-set, determined to decode their complexity while appreciating their perplexing beauty.  These magical objects “depended on a secret which was supposed to never be revealed.”1   Often times, Cartier’s own retail staff were discouraged from knowing in-detail the mechanical intricacies of the famed Maison’s Mystery Clock creations.  They accepted that “the wonder of these clocks guarded their secret like the Sphinx, and [Cartier] protected them from the eyes of prying admirers.”

Following the legendary creations from the 1920s, Cartier revisited the Mystery clock theme in the 1980s, creating modern masterpieces based on the earlier models.  The magical wonder of Cartier Mystery Clocks prevails today with the present lot and the following two examples, ‘The Grand Mogul Pavillion Mystery Clock’ (Lot 2529) and ‘The Egyptian Temple Panther Portico Mystery Clock’ (Lot 2530).
