Christie’s Magnificent Jewels – Geneva – May 15th, 2013

Christie's

Next month Christie’s Geneva will offer a bevy of beautiful baubles and dazzling diamonds at its Magnificent Jewels sale on May 15th, including the “101” diamond.  Originally found at the Jwaneng Mine in Botswana, the 236-carat rough diamond took 21 months to polish to perfection with its final 101.73 carats, hence the “101.”

101-ct-pear-shaped-diamond-A

A SPECTACULAR AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT DIAMOND
The pear-shaped diamond weighing approximately 101.73 carats, in black leather fitted case and box
Accompanied by report no. 17209248 dated 30 January 2013 from the GIA Gemological Institute of America stating that the diamond is D colour, Flawless clarity, with Excellent Polish and Excellent Symmetry; and a Diamond Type Classification letter indicating that the diamond is Type IIa

Price Realized:  $26,746,541

Exceptionally rare not only for its large size but also for its combination of D color, flawless clarity and classification as a Type IIA diamond, a prestigious diamond grading for which less than 2% of the world’s diamond production account.  An even more staggering number, “out of a total annual worldwide diamond production in excess of 100 million carats, the Gemological Institute of America estimates there are no more than 600 diamond crystals that finish as polished stones between one and two carats and that are D color, flawless clarity.” (source)  At just over 101 carats, this pear-shaped beauty will have no issue adding a significant amount to the overall auction sales total.

For Rahul Kadakia, Head of Jewellery at Christie’s Switzerland and Americas, “This diamond is in its scale, quality, and rarity one of the most beautiful ‘white’ diamonds Christie’s has ever had the honour of offering for sale.”

The number of important, large diamonds seem to have increased at Christie’s recently, with several of its record diamond sales occurring over the last two years.

The well-known Geneva jeweller Jean Lombard (1912-1988) opened his premises in 1936. Not long after the Second World War he befriended Carl Théodor Fabergé, the grandson of Peter Carl Fabergé, they were to cooperate during the next twenty years. Inspired by the Renaissance, he created imaginative jewellery with splendour and love for detail. He was also known for giving old jewellery a new life.
Jean Lombard entertained the best connections to the Russian nobility and received Prince Felix Youssoupov, when the prince was living in exile and forced to sell his family jewels, including the famous La Pelegrina pearl in 1953. Many refined and knowledgeable collectors counted among Lombard’s clients and he was jeweller to Her Majesty the Queen Frederica of Greece and His Majesty the King Farouk of Egypt.

The present pearl tiara was commissioned by an Italian Countess in 1960.
