Ellen’s epic star-stuffed selfie that broke Twitter, live pizza delivery to feed hungry nominees (with class-act dad Brad Pitt handing out the paper plates) and Pharrell making everyone happy with his infectiously fun song were among the highlights (and awkward moments) of last night’s 86th Academy Awards show hosted by Ellen Degeneres.
Plenty went right, and a lot went wrong (can anyone in Hollywood read from a teleprompter??), at the Oscars and the biggest winners were ‘Gravity’ and ’12 Years a Slave,’ taking home a total of 10 Oscars between them:
’12 Years a Slave’ won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong’o) and Best Adapted Screenplay
‘Gravity’ won the Academy Award for Best Director (Alfonso Cuaron), Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing
The other major awards were won by Cate Blanchett for Best Actress (‘Blue Jasmine’), Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor (‘Dallas Buyers Club’), and Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor (‘Dallas Buyers Club’).
Before all the pizza and selfies, there was the Red Carpet. The stars played it safe this year with plenty of whites, metallic and serious shades of darkness. Dresses aside, the jewelry was aplenty this year and the brands with the biggest presence were led by Tiffany & Co., Bulgari, Chopard and Neil Lane. Without further ado, here are the best jewels from Hollywood’s biggest night!
Charlize Theron – Christian Dior Haute Couture dress, Christian Louboutin shoes and Harry Winston jewelry
Personally, I think Charlize Theron killed it with this look – her dramatic black dress with plunging neckline formed a stunning silhouette and the Harry Winston diamond pendant necklace (reported to be worth $15 million) suited the cut of the bodice perfectly. Her jewelry, hair and dress were perfectly balanced and Theron was the epitome of glamour last night.
Jewelry Note: The feature stone is a 31-carat square-emerald-cut flawless diamond set in a cluster of diamonds. It has 155 total diamonds.
Lupita Nyong’o – custom-made ‘Nairobi blue’ Prada gown (the color reminded her of Nairobi, the capital of her home country Kenya) and Fred Leighton jewelry
The shade of ‘Nairobi blue’ on Lupita Nyong’o was a breath of fresh air, the front and back deep V’s and flowing pleated skirt seemed to lift Lupita off her feet as she floated down the red carpet. Keeping her jewelry minimal, she wore a beautiful yet simple embellished gold and diamond headband, dynamite diamond crescent earrings in rose gold, a 19th Century yellow gold and diamond coiled snake bracelet, an 18k yellow gold Frog ring, a 19th Century yellow gold, pearl and diamond ring, a 19th Century yellow gold and opal ring, and finally a 1960s 18k gold, turquoise, and diamond ring.
Cate Blanchett – sleevless nude Armani Privé gown featuring Swarovski crystal embellishments, Roger Vivier shoes and Chopard jewelry
The reigning Queen of the Red Carpet was as regal as ever in her shimmering nude Armani gown and, though her beautiful opal and diamond pendant earrings from Chopard’s 2014 Red Carpet Collection seemed to fizzle on the red carpet, the opal sparklers were ablaze on stage as Cate Blanchett accepted her Oscar under the bright spotlight. Blanchett also wore a 49-carat brown diamond bracelet and a ‘toi et moi’ pear-shaped white gold diamond ring.
Jewelry Note: Chopard drop earrings featuring 62 white opals (33 carats) set in white diamond pave and 18k white gold – the first preview of Chopard’s 2014 Red Carpet Collection.
Kate Hudson – Atelier Versace dress and Neil Lane jewelry
Taking a cue from Old Hollywood, Kate Hudson brought retro glamour to the red carpet in this divine white number with a serious V-neck (for Versace?) and elegant swooping cape/shawl. Delicate diamond drop earrings, slim diamond line bracelet and a couple statement rings completed her fabulous look.
Jessica Biel – sequined strapless Chanel Haute Couture gown, Manolo Blahnik shoes and Tiffany & Co. jewelry
The presenter was dipped in sequins and diamonds from head to toe, wearing a shimmery variously pale hued dress with plenty of Tiffany & Co. jewels: a diamond statement necklace, a pair of diamond and aquamarine pendant earrings, a stack of wide diamond bracelets on one wrist and an aquamarine and diamond bow cuff bracelet on the other. I thought the blue aquamarines brought out the beautiful pale tones of the dress.
Naomi Watts – Calvin Klein Collection dress and shoes, and Bulgari clutch and jewelry
A winter wonderland of a look, Naomi Watts glistened like a snow angel in her purest white beaded Calvin Klein dress and dramatic diamond jewelry from Bulgari. Her spiderweb-like necklace was my favorite of the night, as was her pavé diamond Serpenti bracelet. Her Bulgari clutch was to die for, too.
Angelina Jolie – Elie Saab dress, Ferragamo shoes and clutch, Robert Procop jewelry
Angelina brought the bling last night, not only with her dazzling Elie Saab gown, but with 42 carats of diamonds dangling from her ears. The mother of six looked stellar on stage, but I found her dress a bit matronly for her (please don’t hate me). Either way, Hollywood’s shining power couple took the red carpet by storm.
Amy Adams – navy blue strapless Gucci Premiere dress, Christian Louboutin shoes, Tiffany & Co. clutch and jewely
The Best Actress nominee was sleek and chic in navy blue, adding a pop of color with her rhodocrosite, lapis lazuli, turquoise and gold earrings and yellow diamond line bracelet from Tiffany & Co. On the red carpet the dress was sublime, but on stage I felt it had a uniform-like look (again, please don’t hate me).
Jewelry Note: Amy Adams wore a reported $1.4 million worth of jewelry from the Tiffany & Co. Blue Book Collection. It included 18k yellow gold rhodochrosite, lapis and turquoise earrings with diamonds; 18k yellow gold square modified brilliant yellow diamond bracelet; 18k yellow gold ring with fire opal, pink sapphire, yellow diamond and spessertite garnet beads; and gold Tiffany Metro diamond band rings.
Julia Roberts – Givenchy Couture dress and Bulgari jewelry
A lacy peplum Givenchy dress put some pep in Julia Roberts’s step on the red carpet and her diamond Bulgari Parentesi earrings added some extra sparkle. I particularly enjoyed her diamond statement bracelet, also from Bulgari.
Sandra Bullock – Alexandra McQueen dress and Lorrain Schwartz jewelry
The Best Actress nominee wowed in her midnight blue satin McQueen gown and rockin’ Lorraine Schwartz diamond earrings ($1.8 million) and bangle bracelet. Oozing pure red carpet glamour, the Oscar-winning actress, who was the sole star of ‘Gravity’ – save for George Clooney’s brief performance – held her own last night while her film collected a total of seven awards.
Jennifer Lawrence – Dior dress, Brian Atwood shoes, Ferragamo clutch and Neil Lane jewelry
Tripping yet again at the Oscars (and laughing off Ellen’s calling her out on it during the show), Jennifer Lawrence brushed off the red carpet gaffe in stride wearing a striking red Dior gown and a rock crystal and diamond ‘backlace’ from Neil Lane. The necklace features 100 carats of diamonds and priced at $2 million.
Portia de Rossi – Naeem Khan ivory honeycomb-beaded halter gown, Brian Atwood shoes, Fendi purse and Dior jewelry
Kirsten Bell – Lavender corseted strapless Roberto Cavalli dress, Brian Atwood shoes, Ferragamo clutch, Piaget jewelry -
The icy lavender dress was the actress’s first choice because she felt it had Frozen-vibe, and her Piaget diamond jewelry frosted the overall look.
Idina Menzel – deep green Vera Wang dress and Chimento jewelry
The sultry songstress looked stellar in her deep emerald green Vera Wang and stunning diamond statement necklace and diamond bracelet by Chimento.
Jewelry Note: Idina Menzel wore a Chimento 77.12-carat diamond collar worth more than $300,000, a Chimento 34.6-carat diamond bracelet worth over $100,000 on the red carpet along with Demarco diamond earrings, and a Suzanne Kalan diamond ring.
Catherine Martin – Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger brooch worn as a pendant
The Oscar-winning costume designer donned perhaps the most creative and brilliant pieces of jewelry last night, gallantly wearing an amethyst and diamond Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger brooch worn as a pendant while accepting her two Oscars last night.
