The Blue Beryl: Aquamarine

As the watery blue variety of beryl, aquamarine is the cool cousin of the mineral family. While I did a post all about aquamarine last year, I’d like to refresh your memory with a few fun facts about the seafaring stone.

  • Aquamarine is both the birthstone for March and the gem given on the 19th wedding anniversary.
  • The gem’s color range is quite narrow:  blue, very slightly greenish blue, greenish blue, very strongly greenish blue or green-blue. The most valuable shade is a dark blue to slightly greenish blue with moderately strong intensity.
  • The most valuable aquamarines come from Brazil, but it is also mined in Kenya, Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Russia.
  • The largest aquamarine of gemstone quality ever mined was found in Marambaia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1910, weighed over 110kg and measured 19 inches long and 17 inches in diamonds. The largest cut aquamarine gem is the Dom Pedro aquamarine and can be see at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History.
  • Aquamarine is pleochroic, which means it shows different colors in different crystal directions—in the case of aquamarine, they’re near-colorless and strong blue.

For those born in March, or those who simply love aquamarines, I’ve found a few aquamarine jewels to add to your birthday, or jewelry, wish list. Happy Birthday to everyone born in March!
