For precious gems, the rarest and the best is king in Hong Kong, the next stop for Sotheby’s jewelry auction season. On April 6th, the auction house will host its Magnificent Jewels & Jadeite sale packed with impressive colored and colorless diamonds, exceptional jadeite, rubies of the finest quality, and strands of natural pearls. Though material is more often valued over design or maker in the Hong Kong auction market, the sale includes several splendid signed vintage and contemporary pieces by renowned jewelers. With approximately 320 lots, the sale is estimated to achieve in excess of $99 million.

If pink diamonds are more your style, then you will be pleased to know the sale features a 4.57-carat Internally Flawless Fancy Vivid pink heart-shaped diamond surrounded by pear-shaped diamond in a ring mounted by Carvin French (est. $6 – 7 million); and a pair of exquisite pendant earrings set with a 4.01-carat Fancy Intense purple-pink diamond and a 3.72-carat Fancy Intense purplish-pink diamond (est. $6 – 7 million).

Pair of Fancy Intense Purple-Pink Diamond, Fancy Intense Purplish-Pink Diamond and Diamond Pendant Earrings – Suspending a pear-shaped fancy intense purple-pink diamond weighing 4.01 carats and a fancy intense purplish-pink diamond weighing 3.72 carats, surmounted by an inverted heart-shaped fancy purplish pink and fancy intense pink diamond weighing 0.63 and 0.55 carat respectively, to a step-cut diamond background altogether weighing approximately 5.05 carats, mounted in 18 karat white and pink gold.

Rubies, the blood-red beauties of the gem world, are always a favorite in the Hong Kong sales, with this one showcasing a ruby and diamond necklace and matching pair of earrings by Faidee set with unheated Burmese Pigeon’s Blood rubies and diamonds (est. $2.6 – 3 million). The total weight of the rubies in the suite is 124.8 carats combined with a total of 59.25 carats of diamonds.

More impressive is a pair of ruby and diamond earrings by Bulgari (est. $4.5 – 5 million) that burn bright red with the 7.80 and 7.10-carat Unheated Burmese Mogok rubies set as pendants.

Also from Italian-jeweler Bulgari, a jaw-dropping diamond necklace, circa 1950s (est. $1 – 1.2 million), exemplifies the feminine, sinuous lines favored in jewelry of the post-World War II era. The flowing necklace suspends seven large pear-shaped diamond drops, the largest one at its center weighing 7.04-carats and graded D color and Internally Flawless.

Another stunning and sumptuous necklace in the sale is an Art Deco diamond and emerald necklace by Boucheron, circa 1930s (est. $320,000 – 410,000). Designed as an dramatic diamond collar, the necklace’s main attraction is the 65.33-carat Colombian emerald drop at its center.

For natural pearl collectors, the sale teems with Mother’s Nature finest living gem. Leading the pack is a triple-strand natural pearl necklace with a sapphire and diamond clasp (est. $3.3 – 3.8 million), which is strung with a total of 137 pearls measuring 14.10 to 6.20 mm in diameter.

Very fine jadeite features heavily in the sale, which falls nearly one year after the record-breaking sale of the Hutton-Mdivani necklace at Sotheby’s Hong Kong last year. Though possessing none of the provenance or similar prestige of the Hutton-Mdivani, the major jadeite necklace (est. $5.8 – 7 million) in the sale is exceptional in its own right. The necklace is strung with 67 jadeite beads measuring approximately 11.07 to 9.32 mm in diameter, of matching fine texture and intensely saturated green color.

Exceptional Jadeite Bead & Diamond Necklace – Composed of sixty-seven jadeite beads of emerald green colour and fine translucency, completed by a clasp centring on a brilliant-cut diamond weighing 2.01 carats, surrounded by brilliant-cut diamonds together weighing approximately 1.35 carats, mounted in 18 karat white gold, length approximately 715mm. Jadeite beads approximately 11.07 to 9.32mm.
