Last night’s Met Gala, fashion’s most anticipated event of the year, celebrated the opening of the Costume Institute’s exhibition “China: Through the Looking Glass“. Exploring Chinese influences on Western fashion, the exhibition set the stylistic theme of the evening with plenty of Eastern-inspired gowns and jewelry. While some stars opted for bare skin and strategically placed sequins, others embraced the enigmatic objects and imagery from the East in their ensembles. As for jewelry, Oriental motifs and materials were obvious choices, though I do wish someone had donned something Chinoiserie-inspired from the Art Deco period. Overall, the night left me disappointed as yet another fabulous opportunity to wear amazing vintage jewelry – with actual relevance to the event – was wasted…
Carved jade earrings from Fred Leighton seemed to be favorites of the night:
Ethereal creations by Taiwanese fine art jeweler Cindy Chao adorned a number of attendees, including Wendy Murdoch, Olivia Munn, Ivanka Trump, and Ziyi Zhang.
Other jewelry standouts for me were Giambattista Valli, Lizzie Tisch, Uma Thurman, and Bee Shaffer.
